Double GlazingMelbourne, AU

Double Glazing that Quiets Melbourne.

Double-glazed aluminium windows and doors from Alumina cut energy loss, dampen traffic and aircraft noise, and eliminate winter condensation — without compromising the slim architectural sightlines that make aluminium worth specifying in the first place.

How double glazing works

Two panes of glass are bonded together with a sealed cavity — typically 12 mm filled with argon gas and edged with a warm-edge spacer. The cavity slows conductive heat transfer between the panes. Add a Low-E coating that reflects radiant heat back inside in winter and outside in summer, and the assembly delivers a substantially lower U-value than standard 4 mm single glazing.

Single to double glazing upgrades

Most Melbourne homes built before the 2010 NCC energy provisions still run single glazing, which loses heat and condenses on cold mornings. Alumina replaces single-glazed timber, steel and old aluminium frames with new double-glazed aluminium units in matching openings — typically completed in a day per room.

Acoustic glazing for busy areas

If you're on a tram route, near the Tullamarine flight path or backing onto a freeway, we specify acoustic laminate (PVB interlayer) inner panes. The achievable Rw rating depends on glass thickness, air gap and the rest of the building envelope — we can specify to a target Rw where required.

Pet door integration

Double-glazed units can be factory-fitted with a pet door opening for cats or dogs — maintaining the thermal and acoustic performance of the sealed unit while giving pets independent access. We coordinate the size and placement with you before manufacture.

Circle & arch glass

Custom circular and arched (radius) double-glazed units for heritage renovations, feature windows and architect-designed openings. Manufactured to your exact template or radius measurement, with matching arched frames in AWS architectural profiles to maintain sightlines and thermal performance across standard and non-standard shapes.

Privacy glass options

For bathrooms, laundries, entry sidelights or any opening where privacy matters, we offer a range of patterned and frosted glass within our double-glazed units — including reeded, ribbed, satin, frosted and obscure finishes. Each option diffuses light and obscures sightlines while maintaining the full thermal break, acoustic seal and WERS-rated performance of the unit. Because the privacy finish is built into the glass itself, it's a cleaner, more durable solution than retrofitted film, tint or frosted film that can peel, bubble or discolour over time.

Compliance & energy ratings

Every double-glazed unit is WERS-rated (Window Energy Rating Scheme, administered by AGWA) with documented U-value and SHGC. Specifications meet NCC 2022 Volume Two and the 7-star NatHERS requirement Victoria adopted on 1 May 2024 for new homes and major renovations. We supply documentation for your builder, architect or NatHERS assessor.

Frequently asked

Is double glazing worth it in Melbourne?

Yes. According to YourHome (Australian Government) and Sustainability Victoria, up to 40% of a home's heating energy can be lost through single-glazed windows. Double-glazed aluminium with a Low-E coating roughly halves the U-value of standard single glazing, improves comfort near windows on Melbourne's cold mornings, and reduces condensation on the internal glass surface.

How much does double glazing cost?

As a guide, upgrading a standard window to a double-glazed aluminium IGU is typically $200–$500 more per opening than single glazing. Whole-home double glazing for a 3-bedroom Melbourne house generally ranges between $12,000 and $30,000 supplied and installed.

Can I retrofit double glazing to my existing windows?

In most cases the most reliable, best-performing option is to replace the entire window with a new double-glazed aluminium unit, because aluminium frames need to be wider to accommodate two panes. Alumina handles full like-for-like replacement so your wall openings stay untouched.

What's the difference between double glazing and Low-E glazing?

Double glazing refers to two panes with a sealed air or argon gap. Low-E is a microscopic coating on one of those panes that reflects radiant heat. The two work together — most of our double-glazed units include Low-E to lift the WERS rating and the assessed NatHERS star rating of the home.
